How to Build a Successful Church Online Team | Alan George

The world is changing rapidly, and with that change comes new challenges for churches. One of the most significant challenges churches face today is building successful online teams. The idea of building a team that leads and provides pastoral care for your online community was not something churches needed to think about 20 years ago. However, it’s become the norm in doing ministry today. Building a team that reflects the heart and vision of the church is critical. The good news is that with the right strategy, it is possible to create thriving online teams that can help your church reach and minister to people beyond your physical building.

In this blog post, we'll explore three key steps to building successful church online teams.

1. Clarify your vision

Before you can build a successful online team, you must have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. If you’ve talked to me or read any of my other blog posts, you know that I always start here. Vision is foundational for building a ministry and the same is true for building your team. People want to be part of something that’s bigger than themselves. It’s essential that you not only know your vision in your heart, but you also have to work towards being able to communicate it effectively and in a way that inspires people to take action. Ask yourself: what are your goals for your church's online presence? Do you want to reach new audiences? Engage with existing members? Provide resources and support that help people grow in their relationship with Jesus? Once you have a clear understanding of your vision, it's easier to identify the roles needed for your team and recruit the right people to execute that vision. Remember, your vision for your online ministry needs to be aligned with your in-person ministry as well.

2. Find the best people who can execute that vision

Once you've identified the roles needed for your online team, it's time to find the best people to fill those roles. Look for people who are passionate about your church's mission and vision. This is important. We want people who want to be a part of something that’s bigger than themselves. Since your team is online, you may have people interested in joining your team who may not live near a physical location. Make sure you have a process for them. I’ve written more about this in the blog post - The Ultimate Guide to Recruiting and Retaining Volunteers for Your Online Church. They should also have the necessary skills needed for the roles you are recruiting for and are committed to working collaboratively with others. One way to find great team members is to reach out to your existing church community and ask for recommendations. I’ve always loved the idea of having your volunteer roles posted with descriptions so people can see what they are signing up for.

3. Give them the resources they need to succeed

After selecting your online team members, it's crucial to provide them with the necessary resources to achieve success. These resources may include access to software, different platforms your church uses, and guidance from experienced team members. In addition to providing these tools, it's also essential to offer an amazing onboarding experience along with ongoing training and support to foster continual growth and development of your team members' skills. By investing in your team member's development, you can enhance their capabilities and ensure that they stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies while serving your community in a way that reflects the heart of God. This investment will not only benefit your team but also enable your church to provide high-quality online experiences and better reach your target audience. Remember that supporting your team members is critical to building a successful online team, and you must continually assess their needs to provide relevant and useful resources to help them excel.

Did you notice something else? Everything I mentioned above is relevant to any team you are building in your church! This is not limited to just online teams. I firmly believe in leveraging technology to make the truth of Christ accessible to all people groups, regardless of distance, language, and cultural barriers, and building online teams to fulfill this mission is a part of how we see this vision accomplished. I currently partner with churches and leaders to help them identify how they can leverage technology to further the Gospel and reach people like never before. If you're interested in building a successful online team for your church but aren't sure where to start, let’s grab a call and chat. I believe that together we can lives changed by the love of Jesus.
